Trump, The Left and the Working Class
For all of Trump's demonization of the Left, Trump basically co-opted two issues that the Left championed.
Trump co-opted the populist Left's critiques against NAFTA and its negative effects on the American working class. During the 1990s, the only voices on the political scene speaking against NAFTA were progressives like Bernie Sanders, Paul Wellstone, and Sherrod Brown and a few maverick conservatives like Jesse Helms and Ross Perot.
Trump also co-opted the anti-war Left's critique of the Iraq War. These anti-war leftists were called unpatriotic by right wing politicians and news sites for criticizing the war.
Leftist activists criticized NAFTA and the Iraq War when it was unpopular to do so.
Trump only began speaking out against both issues in 2015-2016, when it was more acceptable to do so.
With the heated rhetoric by Donald Trump and right wing media demonizing leftists, I worry that the U.S. is heading towards another Red Scare like in the 1950s.
