Think of the Prisoners Detained by ICE

During December 2024, the late Pope Francis issued the Bull of Indiction "Spes non Confundit" for the 2025 Jubilee year (https://www.vatican.va/content/francesco/en/bulls/documents/20240509_sp…). "Spes non Confundit" called on Christians to offer help to prisoners.

"Spes non Confundit" stated: "During the Holy Year, we are called to be tangible signs of hope for those of our brothers and sisters who experience hardships of any kind. I think of prisoners who, deprived of their freedom, daily feel the harshness of detention and its restrictions, lack of affection and, in more than a few cases, lack of respect for their persons. I propose that in this Jubilee Year governments undertake initiatives aimed at restoring hope; forms of amnesty or pardon meant to help individuals regain confidence in themselves and in society; and programmes of reintegration in the community, including a concrete commitment to respect for law."

This comes during a time when Donald Trump's administration has been ignoring the right of due process of immigrants as they hastily deport many of them to a prison in El Salvador.

The center of the Catholic faith, Jesus, was himself unfairly jailed as a political prisoner.

The new Pope Leo XIV spoke out for the release of imprisoned journalists (https://www.ap.org/news-highlights/spotlights/2025/pope-leo-xiv-urges-r….).

Pope Leo XIV said at a gathering of journalists: "“The church recognises in these witnesses — I am thinking of those who report on war even at the cost of their lives — the courage of those who defend dignity, justice and the right of people to be informed, because only informed individuals can make free choices...

...The suffering of these imprisoned journalists challenges the conscience of nations and the international community, calling on all of us to safeguard the precious gift of free speech and of the press.”
