Filipino Canadians Mourning the Killings At The Vancouver Filipino Festival

The Filipino Canadian community mourned the tragic deaths of 11 people. These people were killed when an SUV plowed into a crowd at the Lapu Lapu festival in Vancouver celebrating Filipino heritage.

The 11 people killed ranged in age from five to 65 years old.

The Lapu Lapu Festival was named after Datu Lapu-Lapu, a fearless Indigenous Visayan Chieftain from Mactan, Philippines, who defeated Magellan in the Battle of Mactan unfolded on April 27, 1521. Datu Lapu-Lapu became the embodiment of a people's resolve to defend their land and culture against colonialism.

According to an article by Rappler (https://www.rappler.com/philippines/overseas-filipinos/caring-culture-h…), nearly 1 million Canadians are of Filipino ethnic origin, and more than 172,000 Filipino Canadians are in British Columbia, according to the 2021 census. A large number of Filipino Canadians are caregivers, nurses and medical technicians.
