Empathy for Charlie Kirk's Death In Spite Of Our Different Views
I was deeply heartbroken when I heard of Charlie Kirk's murder. But I had a difficult time reconciling my sad feelings with the racist, misogynistic and transphobic views that Kirk promoted.
Then I remembered something progressive and civil rights activist Shirley Chisholm did in 1972.
That year, the progressive congresswoman Shirley Chisholm visited arch segregationist George Wallace shortly after Wallace was shot in an assassination attempt.
Chisholm could show empathy for Wallace without betraying her progressive values.
Wallace was shocked but also deeply moved that Chisholm visited him.
Wallace eventually moved away from his racist views. During the last years, he championed the civil rights of African Americans and appointed African Americans to state government positions to try to make amends for his earlier segregationist views and policies.
