Since 2014, we have worked with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands each year to promote human rights, peace, justice and security, using cartoons and our network of cartoonists. Working with Dutch embassies all over the world, ambassadors were paired with cartoonists from our network to give guest lectures at schools and universities in several countries. Cartoonists showed the importance of their work, and ambassadors talked about the relevance of peace and justice.

5 is a new international media platform with the mission to imagine and create a new reality by sharing stories, spotlighting new perspectives and encouraging progressive action. We worked with them to produce cartoons on themes and topics they deal with, such as Being Alive and How to bridge the racism chasm?

The World Press Freedom Conference (WPFC) will take place on December 9 and 10, 2020 at the World Forum in The Hague, a city known for its role in international peace and justice. This year’s conference aims to digitally bring together the professional community of journalists, media companies, human rights defenders, members of the judiciary (including judges, lawyers and prosecutors) policymakers and NGOs, and to connect them to a large global audience that can actively participate online. Cartoon Movement partnered with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cartooning for Peace to organize a cartoon competition on this year's conference theme: journalism without fear or favour

Our social media manager Emanuele Del Rosso hosts live chats on our Instagram channel, talking to different cartoonists and cartoon experts around the globe. The talks focus on satire, censorship, copyright and other issues that pertain to political cartoons.

On January 7, 2015, a bloody attack on the offices of French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo shook the world. Do cartoonists still feel the effects five years later? Are we all still Charlie, or has the space for satirical freedom (and thus, freedom of expression in general) diminished? We were commissioned by Dutch media museum Beeld en Geluid Den Haag to produce a series of cartoons in which our cartoonists would answer this question.

Between 2011 and 2019, we produced cartoons for the National 4 and 5 May Committee in the Netherlands every year. These cartoons are about freedom and are related to May 5th, Liberation Day. Every year, the selected cartoons are used in various publications, online and offline, to promote Liberation Day (May 5th), and to remind the Dutch just how special and important the freedom is that they have enjoyed since the end of the Second World War in 1945.

In support of the International Conference on Mental Health and Psychosocial Support in Crisis Situations, taking place in Amsterdam on 7 & 8 October 2019, we were asked by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs to organize a cartoon contest on the topic of mental health.

For their 2019 campaign, we partnered with Excision parlons-en ! to create 10 cartoons aiming at raising awareness on Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and the risks before summer holidays among secondary students in France.

In 2018, the world celebrated the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). The Universal Declaration of Human rights was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1948 and is a milestone document in the history of human rights. Together with the United Nations Human Rights Office (OHCHR) and the government of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, we launched a project creating cartoons about the importance of the UDHR.

The global arms trade is suffused with corruption, imperils the vulnerable and makes us all less safe. Yet arms merchants and their government supporters can turn to a set of time-honed and well-packaged arguments to justify the status quo. For the World Peace Foundation, we created 7 cartoons to illustrate the seven myths the arms industry uses to deflect criticism.

In 2017, we organized an international cartoon competition with the theme resistance. Resistance is not a simple choice. The outcome of resistance is never clear, and the consequences of such a decision could be dire, to you, or, perhaps even worse, to your family. We received a total 1781 submissions from 76 countries. The jury selected 57 cartoons, including 9 honorable mentions and 3 winners.

The Rights Forum was founded in 2009 by former Dutch Prime Minister Andreas van Agt. It is a high-level network of former ministers and professors of international law who have joined forces to promote a just and durable solution to the Israel-Palestine conflict. The organization’s explicit and consistent reference framework is international law and human rights. We created a series of caricatures of Benjamin Netanyahu for The Rights Forum.
