The Black Women Who Fight For America's Democratic Ideals

A few years ago I read an article that stated that over the course of American history, it has been Black women who has been in the forefront in the fight to get our country to live up to its best democratic principles.

We owe a lot to Phyllis Wheatley, Harriet Tubman, Sojourner Truth, Ida B. Wells, Dorothy Height, Ella Baker, Rosa Parks, Diane Nash, Fanny Lou Hamer, Angela Davis, Audre Lorde, Maya Angelou, Toni Morrison, bell hooks, and so many Black women who fought for the abolition of slavery, women’s suffrage, civil rights, women’s rights, LGBTQIA+ rights, and economic justice for all Americans.

So on this 250th anniversary of our country’s founding, I created this cartoon to thank the Black women who’ve fought for the U.S. to be a better nation.
