SUMMARY
This is the first volume of John Adams' monumental three-volume defense of the United States Constitution. During the 1780s, Adams served in Great Britain as an ambassador to the Court of St. James. Despite his distance from the United States, his friends at home kept him apprised of the developments of the Constitutional Convention underway in Philadelphia. In this work, Adams articulates the classical republican theory of mixed government.
