The Vatican seagull
A lonely chimney above the Sistine Chapel will soon be the most closely watched object in the world.
After each round of voting during the conclave to elect a new pope, the ballots are burned, and a glance at the chimney high above the Vatican signals the results. White smoke means a new pope has been elected. Black smoke means more voting is needed. A seagull sitting on the chimney means... Wait, now what?
During the last conclave in 2013, as millions of people focused their gaze on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, a seagull landed on the metal chimney cover at just the right moment.
