There’s No Way Like the American Way
Billionaires, let alone trillionaires, should not exist in a world where the basic necessities of life aren’t even close to being covered. In fact, the existence of billionaires and now trillionaires requires the existence of millions of people in poverty, the working poor, a shrinking middle class, and the largest gap between the classes since the Gilded Age.
Billionaires, let alone trillionaires, should not exist in a world in which democracy is the desired outcome. These people have no way of spending all their money, so they spend it to corrupt and buy politics in the United States and around the world so they can get more money. They have no allegiance to their neighbors or to anyone other than themselves. These people are leeches, they are parasites on our society, and the true welfare queens. If we want to preserve our democracy and live in a world in which our neighbors don’t have to choose between buying groceries and getting medicine, we must tax them into oblivion.
This isn’t some radical idea. We’ve done this before. Harry Truman and Dwight D. Eisenhower had a 92% marginal income tax rate for the top earners in the United States. This period was known as the golden age of the middle class. We did it then, and we can do it again. We must do it again.
