Sandcastles of Resistance

For years, the axis of resistance was framed as strategic depth, a protective ring meant to project power and deter enemies far from Iran’s borders. In practice, it required enormous financial, military, and political investment. Resources that could have gone toward infrastructure, jobs, education, and economic stability at home were instead funneled into sustaining regional proxies.

Now that several pillars of this network are weakened or under direct pressure, the cost benefit equation looks different. As outer layers erode, the center becomes more exposed, and the narrative of unstoppable influence fades. Strategic ambition abroad has come with a domestic price, and that trade off is becoming harder to justify as both external leverage and internal resilience decline.
