Menhebbak

The word written in my cartoon, 'Menhebbak', is an Arabic word which means 'we love you'. This was the slogan that Assad supporters repeated throughout the years of the revolution, and it became a motto printed on posters and banners hung in the streets of Syria. Yesterday, videos surfaced of Bashar al-Assad accompanied by Luna al-Shibl — who was later killed under mysterious circumstances — recorded in Ghouta in 2018. The leaks showed Assad mocking his own supporters.
Assad’s supporters loved him… but did he love them back?
