Love Your Neighbor

The end of June also marks the end of Pride Month, and I wanted to address what happened this month with my favorite team in the world, the San Francisco Giants. I’ve been a fan since the womb, and I’ll be one until I’m in my tomb. However, what happened this Pride Month with several players, and the team’s response, was incredibly disappointing.

During the team’s LGBTQ+ Pride Night, 4 pitchers wrote Bible verses on their caps, while another didn’t wear the cap at all. The players said they were expressing their Christian beliefs. While that’s true, it was also a huge middle finger to the San Francisco community, which has historically been a safe haven for the LGBTQ+ community since the days when it was a crime to be yourself.

What made things worse was the front office’s refusal to address the situation, even though the community made its feelings very clear. Later, former Giant Aubrey Huff poured gasoline on the fire with a long, bigoted, homophobic tweet, reigniting the issue.

Baseball is for everyone, and everyone should feel welcome at the ballpark. Fans should feel like their team cares about them and won’t stand for anything, or anyone, trying to change that.

Fun fact, I used to be a youth pastor, and the question I got more than any other was some version of, “What’s the most important thing to know as a Christian?” I always went back to Mark 12:31: “Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no commandment greater than these.” I told them to keep it simple. If you focused on this, you’d live a life that was more Christ-like than that of most people.

These players need a reminder of that.
