This rhetoric sounds like a justification for military invasion and occupation, reducing history to violence and decay rather than culture or memory. Russian officials, including Putin, have repeatedly described vast areas of Ukrainian territory—far beyond the four regions currently occupied by Russia—as “historical” and “Russian.”
