Born in 1939 in Ludwigshafen and living in Berlin since 1953, Rainer Hachfeld is a German playwright and political cartoonist.
Having studied animation and stage design he was occupied with painting in Paris in 1960/61. Then stage designer for (West) Berlin political cabarets. 1965 first political cartoons (Neue Ruhr Zeitung, Die Welt, stern). 1968-82 editor and/or cartoonist with various newspapers in Berlin and West Germany, During this period further stage designs for the political theater »Reichskabarett« and the associated children’s “Grips Theater”. Since 1968 Hachfeld has also written plays for this and other youth theaters. He has also written children’s plays for television and radio.
In 1971 he visited Venezuela for the first time with an exhibition of his cartoons in Caracas. Many visits to Central America followed with exhibitions and publications in Venezuela, Mexico, Cuba and Nicaragua.
Since 1990 Hachfeld has drawn political cartoons for the Berlin daily »neues deutschland« while he continues to write texts for political cabarets, articles on humour and satire and stage plays. He has won two German and five international First Prizes in cartoon contests and was sentenced twice for offending a politician by cartooning him.
Rainer Hachfeld lives as a freelance author and cartoonist in Berlin.
