After seeing the first reports on the Newtown shootings, I knew I could skip any "news" coming out after that as I'd seen the same cycle of public anguish, slobbering media frenzy, and useless "solutions" every time this had happened -- going back to Columbine High, if not earlier. I'd reached the point where I could guess exactly what was going to happen, and when -- the wailing and moaning, the candlelight vigils, the media circus, the spasms of mass insanity, the political exploitation, the loss of media interest, the return to "normal".

Actress Monica Bellucci insists that her planned move from France to Brazil has nothing to do with an upcoming tax hike which prompted actor Gerard Depardieu to flee France. Depardieu recently accepted Russian citizenship after criticising the French socialist government over plans to implement a 75% tax on the country's most wealthy residents.
This submission is probably too late, but I was inspired by a statement that I read from poet/activist Grace Paley. Grace Paley wrote that the fight for gender equality is just as liberating for men as for women, as it would allow both men and women to be free from constricting gender roles.

The "Idle No More" movement was initiated to stop the Harper government (Canada) from passing more laws and legislation that will further erode treaty and indigenous rights. Theresa Spence, chief of the Attawapiskat First Nation in northern Ontario, been on a hunger strike for 6 weeks which helped to generate media attention on the protest movement. Substandard living conditions are widespread among indigenous people.
