Pitch Beauty & the Beast

To my annoyance, I came across my Trump-themed negative-space "Beauty & the Beast" on the internet today, on some weird website I've never heard of before.

I estimate that my cartoons/illustrations have been used hundreds of times without my permission. It's neat at first, but over time it's downright fucking annoying.

I'm asking the question today: What, if anything, can cartoonists do about the misuse/theft of their work?

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Anyone?

Thanks Tjeerd, great suggestions, copy block sounds good. I will think about taking the chaser role, but will have to see if I have time with all my other stuff.

Hi guys,

Getting back to you on bugs and copyright issues, a little later then promised, sorry about that.

On the copyright: it makes sense to go after the bigger (media) organizations that steal our work, because then there is a chance to get a substantial compensation for unauthorized use of cartoons. In the case of blogs, personal websites etc. it’s often juist too much time to chase down an infringement and get 20 euro at the end of it. Nemo suggested we send a standard email in all cases of these infringements and I think that’s as good idea. In the case of bigger infringements by media, we always take action.

I’ve also tried keeping a monthly blog on the illegal use (a strategy of naming & shaming), but this was just also too much work to keep up, along with all the other CM stuff that needs doing.

It would be fantastic if we had an extra person who could coordinate this, chase down illegal use etc., but we just don’t have the resources. If someone here would be willing to take that role, we could figure out a deal where the money earned from chasing down illegal use is divided between the cartoonist whose work was used and one chasing it down, with no money for CM. But it’s a lot of work with uncertain outcome.

Nemo also suggested a copy block, which will make it more difficult to use our work because people will not be able to right-click and save anymore. Here a site that uses a copy block: https://www.cartoonistgroup.com/

I like this solution a lot more than watermarks and it’s on my wish list for the next iteration of the website.

And Moshe would like a central place where you guys can report bugs and issues with the site, which is a good idea. Maybe we could have a closed FB group for this or something like that? Open to suggestions here.

Yes, Moshe, seriously thinking about the best options. And will get back to you all on this soon, just really been busy these past two weeks.

20 Mar 2018

Tjeerd, answer to the question?

20 Mar 2018

There are more bugs and issues about uploading cartoons. When and where can we discuss them?

16 Mar 2018

All images on the site are displayed at a max of 800 pixels width and a standard resolution of 72 dpi. really not good for printing.

A copy-block has been on my Wishlist of site improvements for some time, and will be added at some point in the future. However, this will not completely stop stealing; it will prevent people from saving pictures directly, but they can still make a screenshot of the page and get the image that way.

As I said, will get back next week in more detail abut what we can potentially do to address this issue.

16 Mar 2018

Hi-RES / Low-RES

Most prints use a resolution of 150 dpi. So, a low-res cartoon of good size is not a problem.
How LOW-Res are our images here?
I doubt most sites pay for every single illustration they might use of any size.

Another FEATURE we could use (I don't know how it's called): A COPY-Block
When you try to Save Image or Copy Image, you can't and get a pop-up "Copyrighted".

15 Mar 2018

Thank you for the replyTjeerd.

15 Mar 2018

Just to allay one fear: people are not able to download high resolution cartoons, either from the CM site or shop, without paying. So there's no stealing of hi res images going on, just lo res. The most common thing we see is CM cartoons being published elsewhere on the Internet without our permission. Sometimes we'll get cases of newspapers stealing our cartoons and using them in print, but those cases are limited as the cartoons they print are low quality then.

15 Mar 2018

Hi Vlad... I think you might be referring to the cartoons turning up on mjcob.com... go and check it out, most likely some of yours are there too..

15 Mar 2018

Thanks for replying Tjeerd, look forward to continuing the discussion next week!

15 Mar 2018

Thank you Arcadio!

15 Mar 2018

Пит, привет. Я не очень понял о каких эскиза идёт речь? И почему они потеряны?

15 Mar 2018

Hi Enrico! I checked out mjcob... it's out of control, isn't it?

15 Mar 2018

Thanks for the appraisal Moshe, I appreciate it. Maybe it's possible to put some sort of stamp on the cartoons when they're uploaded to Cartoon Movement, so as not to diminish the view of the cartoon though. Yes, Tjeerd... your thoughts on the pitching of high res cartoons?

15 Mar 2018

Hi guys, good discussion going on here. And I agree that it's a serious concern. I'm swamped this week giving two workshops a day and finishing an art project, but promise I will take this up early next week so we can discuss what measures we could take.

15 Mar 2018

Hi Vlad. Perhaps you are onto something there with displaying the cartoons as thumbnails... but it means we won't be able to enjoy each others work as much . Sorry about the loss of your cartoons.

15 Mar 2018

Hi NEMO. Some time back, Cartoon Movement addressed this issue, but I think the problem has gotten out of hand. I would like to see a paid role for someone following up on stolen cartoons.

15 Mar 2018

Hi Miguel. Maybe ask Tjeerd. His email to them may carry some weight.

15 Mar 2018

Buenísimo Pete. Voted.

14 Mar 2018

I just checked the site mentioned by Enrico.
Actually, all the most recent CM cartoons are already there. All my CM cartoons are there.
I don't think the people behind that site know what they're doing.

14 Mar 2018

An annoying problem Pete. I've sent an e-mail to Tjeerd because I've noticed that this website https://mjcob.com continue to use cartoons taken from CM without permission and I'm waiting for the answer (Tjeerd could give an aswer to all this question with a post on the CM Blog for example). I think that with the start of the Shop it's necessary that CM should find a way of manage this kind of problems.

14 Mar 2018

G'night!

14 Mar 2018

Thanks for all the replies Miguel, NEMO, Vlad and Moshe... It's too late here in Oz to answer your replies, I'll get onto it in the morning. Cheers.

14 Mar 2018

Firstly, this cartoon is truly amazing. So I'll vote for that. In that sense no wonder, and a compliment, that it's been stolen.
Keyword: stolen. Never accept that. Good suggestion by NEMØ to contact them first but if that doesn't work, don't hesitate to sue.
And yes, I think it's the responsibility of the platform, so if they stole it from CM, CM should take action.
I always post my cartoons in the worst possible quality to prevent them being used, at least for print. This is one reason I'm not happy with the new policy of pitching full resolution cartoons.
Tjeerd...?

14 Mar 2018

It happens to most.
I'd suggest to contact them, ask to get paid or remove your content.

But we could also ask the sites hosting our cartoons to take action. Some do, others don't. I'm new here, I don't know if Cartoonmovement acts on these matters. Let's ask.

13 Mar 2018

Dear Pete: Some of that happened to me a few days ago. I googled my name for some personal reasons and one of my cartoons came up, as an illustration of some posted Article from Dulce Vita Magazine. I asked about but no response. What should we do to prevent that?
