How about:
"The scientifically ignorant use cartoons to push their view that cartoonists are being reasonable for portraying stereotypes of pollution or ecological disasters."
It keeps the political b.s. and fear-mongering out of it and kind of gets to the heart of the matter: Human ignorance.
