    Regards sur Gbagbo is a French-language platform to discuss the international justice case of former president of Ivory Coast Laurent Gbagbo, who is suspected to have played a role in the post-election violence in 2010-2011. We contribute to the platform with international cartoon perspectives on the case.

    World Milk Day

    June 1 is World Milk Day. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) started this day to acknowledge the role of dairy products in our daily lives. Milk is a global food. The Milk Story is an independent Dutch platform that wants to discuss the role of the dairy sector with a broad audience and relevant stakeholders. With Cartoon Movement, The Milk Story explores different perspectives on milk, with editorial cartoons. Although this might not seem a subject that automatically suits editorial cartoons, the themes that relate to the production are important ones. Cartoons produced for this project focus on sustainable agriculture, and the need to feed a growing world population.

    Lot's Foundation

    Lot's Foundation is an organization committed to promoting children's rights. In this educational project about children's rights, Cartoon Movement provides the space for schools and cartoonists to work together. Students upload their ideas in the form of sketches and drawings, and our cartoonists will use these as inspiration to create professional cartoons.

    CAPS2014: Drawing Collective Awareness Platforms

    CAPS2020 and the Cartoon Movement are joining forces to explore perspectives on CAPS (Collective Awareness Platforms for Sustainability and Social Innovation) in view of CAPS2014, the first international event on CAPS (Brussels, July 1-2 2014). Between May 27 and June 24 we are inviting comic artists and cartoonists to reflect on CAPS as a whole, contribute to their definition and spread awareness around the topic.

    Initiated by the African Union in a resolution dating back to 2004, the African Union Human Rights Memorial (AUHRM) is meant to become a memorial for remembering mass atrocities in Africa. 'AUHRM should manifest both the duty to remember, provide a place of recognition as well as mourning and the duty to overcome denial, silence and disregard.'

    Drawing Citizenship: Towards the European Elections

    The ‪European Cultural Foundation‬ (ECF) and the Cartoon Movement are joining forces to explore perspectives on the upcoming European elections through comics and cartoons. ‏Between 31 March and 25 May 2014, we are inviting comic artists and cartoonists to reflect on European citizenship and the various issues that are currently facing Europe. We are not just interested in the EU, but we would like to hear perspectives from countries that are part of European citizens’ daily lives across the continent and beyond.

    Stories of Silent Helpers

    Cordaid is one of the largest development organizations in the Netherlands, with a network of 634 partner organizations in more than thirty countries in Africa, Asia, the Middle East and Latin America. On February 6, Cordaid launched a new platform to celebrate their 100th birthday by sharing the stories of silent helpers. Silent helpers are people who move mountains, just because they are needed. They do this without asking for reward or recognition.

    Peace & Justice

    Article 90 is a unique article in the Dutch Constitution. It calls for the 'promotion and development of international law'. This is an important priority for the Netherlands. Together with World Press Photo, the city of The Hague and the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Cartoon Movement is launching a new project that will involve cartoonists, photographers and students from around the world in a global debate about peace & justice.

    Female Superheroes

    December 2013, the platform femalesuperheroes.nl launched. Female Superheroes tells the inspiring stories of ordinary women. These women become heroes, because they choose to take risks to make life better (for themselves and for others) in the face of oppression. Cartoon Movement and New Statesman comic artist Tom Humberstone supplied all the artwork for the platform.

They have recently renewed their website, and we were asked to create all the visuals for the new site. Cuban artist Alex Falco created 25 images to illustrate the different sections of the website.

  • The Hague Trials Kenya

    The Hague Trials Kenya

    On September 10, 2013, the International Criminal Court (ICC) commenced hearings against Kenya's deputy president, William Ruto, and Kenyan journalist Joshua Sang. On February 5, 2014, the ICC trial against Kenya's president, Uhuru Kenyatta, is scheduled to begin. The three are accused of playing a role in the post-election violence in Kenya in 2007-2008. The Africa Desk of Radio Netherlands Worldwide and This is Africa have set up an online discussion platform to follow these cases. Our cartoonists are contributing to the project by visualizing different perspectives that help fuel the debate.

    On September 9, the first edition of TEDxHagueAcademy took place at the Palace in The Hague, The Netherlands. Nine excellent speakers talked about peace, justice and human rights, with subjects ranging from the Sharia to the international role of China. Our cartoonists were asked to visualize the different subjects.
