Simone Gbagbo will go on trial next week (22 October) in Abidjan on charges of genocide.
Simone Gbagbo, the former first lady of Ivory Coast will start on October 22 in front of the headquarters of the Abidjan Court. The Ivorian government refused his transfer to the International Criminal Court, saying the judiciary Ivorian has jurisdiction to judge.
Case 002/02 will be the second trial where additional charges against Nuon Chea and Khieu Samphan from the Closing Order will be heard. The second trial proceeds from the verdict of Case 002/01, where both accused were sentenced to life imprisonment for crimes against humanity committed during two population movements, from Phnom Penh and elsewhere, as well as the executions of Lon Nol soldiers at Tuol Po Chrey. Case 002/02 addresses the charges related to genocide, forced marriages and rape nationwide, internal purges, security centres, cooperatives.
