The eye
For more than 20 years, whenever I sit down to draw, I try to ignore the “watching eye.” It is not only the presence of state control or surveillance, but also the pressure of audience expectation.
That pressure can be difficult to escape, because as cartoonists, we ultimately draw for an audience. Yet I believe the secret of pushing your boundaries in art and especially in political cartooninng is always ignore those critic and spying eyes.
Freedom of expression begins with that act of resistance.
