Stereotypes

Last week, this cartoon (featuring Hitler) renewed an ongoing debate about the use of stereotypes in cartoons. Many artists argue that the stereotype is an indispensable tool in the cartoonist's toolbox, while others argue that the use of stereotypes is unimaginative and not constructive to an artist's message (also read the opposing columns on our blog). The debate has been going ever since, and has led to some interesting cartoon contribtutions by Gianfranco Uber, KAP, Pavel Constantin, and Sofia Mamalinga.

hahaah! right Tjeerd. when I figure out a politician I draw them in black suit and tie. the tie might be red or blue depending on their wing (which is merely esthetic these days). The varation for the banker is simply the addition of a top hat and generally black sunglasses which hide their humanity. is like a concentration of the negative values that want to be expressed through some archetypical elements, this is why stereotypes should affect to ideologies, facts or repetitive patterns for comical purpose. No offense to individuals, collectives, nations...The problem is how certain circles might interpretate the thing or how they might project their own prejudices , or how they might instrumentalise the message. Those are the big enemies of humour and freedom of expression. then again everyone have their own limits and of course must be ready to accept consequences.

One of the things I always mention when I give a workshop about editorial cartoons is that cartoonists don't like people in suits; whenever you see a character with suit & tie in a cartoon, it's almost guaranteed to be either an evil capitalist or a corrupt politician.

guys, draw the wall street banker in the space! it cannot miss!

02 Dec 2011

Cartoonists should comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable. Personally, my favorite stereotype is the Wall Street banker.

02 Dec 2011

Go for the roumanian in the white space Pavel! Sofia, I wait for the lazy greek in the group picture pleaaase!hahaha

02 Dec 2011

In my country there are a lot of universaly stereotypes: poverty, self-seakyng, arogancy of reachman, corruption, crisis, stupidity but and positive stereotype like as roumanian ospitality, good-maners, intelligence, honest, etc. Congratulations ! You are a good animating

02 Dec 2011

Cecigian, I know, you can find a few of them in the Bilderberg group, dictating the international policies under the shadow of our "democratic" representants :D

02 Dec 2011

Sofia, the mexican can proudly represent the tortured reputation of every southern european ahahah!

02 Dec 2011

Thank you Tjeerd, I thought it was easier to expose my point about this polemic subject through an image rather than collapsing forums hehehe!

02 Dec 2011

Grazie Gianfranco, direi che è uno di quei "debate cartoons" :^-)
l'origine della discussione puoi trovarla sia in un mio vecchio cartoon sui cocomeri raffigurando il dittatore, sia nell'ultima vignetta di Sofia.
