How about making the windshield of the middle plane the same colour as the bird's eye? I think that would add some subtlety to the transformation.

Thanks all! @Arcadio: I originally planned more vivid colors, but I'm very pleased with the color scheme I ended up with through a bit of trial-and-error. @Vitali: I'm a lazy cartoonist, so the idea of drawing a lot of birds transforming into a lot of planes was a bit too tiresome for me.
